Surfing in Costa Rica
Costa Rica is not only rich in nature, volcanoes, waterfalls and hot springs, it is also the closest wave-surf destination for us. If you are looking to give your children a true adventure as well getting rid of some of their limitless energy, Surfing in Costa Rica is the vacation for you!
Of course, once we arrived in Costa Rica we couldn’t skip visiting the world famous active Arenal Volcano located in La Fortuna If you are very lucky, you will be able to witness the natural fireworks at night (hot lava erupting) In our case, we were lucky to just view the volcano because for the first 3 days of our stay it was hidden in the clouds. Of course there is so much MORE to see and do in Costa Rica, it would take you weeks to check-mark all. As our time and budget was limited we decided on the following itinerary for our family -
This Vacation is brought to you by Isabelle!
We choose to travel on American Airlines via Miami, with an overnight with the added benefit of shopping.
We rented a car, with GPS (!!) and proceeded our long drive to La Fortuna – it took about 4 hours with 1 stop for lunch and coffee. Although the drive was long, it was on the back roads through the country side with marvelous views. (But do be prepared for a long drive)
At around dinner time, we checked into our hotel had an early dinner and evening
|Day 3||We woke up to the sound of Monkeys! Rushed out of our cabin, with our binoculars to try to spot them in the trees, which we did! Our hotel included breakfast and we took our leisurely time, devouring all of the delicious fresh fruits. After that we took a dip in the hot springs located on the property and drove to the town La Fortuna for some sightseeing and an early dinner. (The mighty Volcano Arenal still hidden by the clouds)|
Again we woke up to the sound of Monkeys! Now we knew where to find them and we also found the Canopy Tour located on the property of our hotel, so the boys immediately hitched up and soared through the trees. After a dip in the hot springs and a long leisurely breakfast we once again went sightseeing. We stopped at a bridge where we saw local boys swinging from a rope swing into the water, and our boys quickly made friends. (No costs involved!)
Today we decided to go horseback riding with Alfredo’s Horses. (highly recommended) Our youngest son had never ridden, but Alfredo was so patient and understanding that he rode solo like a pro once the trip ended. The tour included a home-made meal by Alfredo’s wife and it was our most delicious meal in Costa Rica – La Fortuna Waterfall is amazing!
Time to check out and drive to JACO, the surf capital of Costa Rica. The drive was shorter, as this time we traveled over the new Pacific Coast highway – We checked into the most amazing 10-suite Boutique Hotel ~ with the place almost to ourselves.
|Day 7/8/9||3 Days of Surfing in the Pacific Ocean – what a thrill!|
|Day 10||Time to pack-up and head back home to Aruba, the drive to the airport in San Jose was a short 60 minutes, and returning the car to boarding took about 2 hours|
