Ik heb eind april 2009 en op 17 juli 2009 met Uw maatschappij Aruba / Miami / Aruba moge vliegen en wil middels deze van de gelegenheid gebruikmaken U te complimenteren met de uitmuntende service dewelke mijn vrouw en ik tijdens deze vluchten hebben mogen ervaren. De eerste maal met Uw oude vliegtuig en de laatste maal met Uw nieuwe.

U beschikt over een bijzonder professionele, serviciale, behulpzame, vriendelijke en beminnelijke cabine personeel waar menig grote luchtvaart Maatschappij een voorbeeld aan zou kunnen hebben.

De afhandeling van de bagage bij aankomst op Aruba was snel en efficient. Bij aankomst in de aankomsthal was de bagage reeds rollende.

Mijn regelmatige vluchten van Aruba naar Miami en terug zullen in de toekomst dan ook, waar mogelijk, enkel uitgevoerd worden met Uw Maatschappij. De in dit schrijven verwoorde complimenten zal ik dan ook gaarne en met genoegen mondeling naar derden brengen.

De Amerikaanse vliegmaatschappij Falcon Air voert sinds 15 mei 2009 vluchten uit ten behoeve van de SLM op het traject Miami - Aruba v.v.

Na het teruggeven van de MD 82 waarmee enkele jaren de regionale vliegdiensten  zijn onderhouden, was de directie van de SLM genoodzaakt vliegend materieel in te huren om de periode tot de certificatie van de twee B737-300 toestellen te overbruggen.

 Voor de diensten naar Belem, Port of Spain, Curacao en Aruba werd de Dominicaanse vliegmaatschappij PAWAD (Pan American World Airways Dominicana) ingehuurd en voor het traject Miami - Aruba v.v. de Amerikaanse carrier Falcon Air.

Gisteren 22 juni 2009 was het de laatste vluchtdag voor beide maatschappijen aangezien de SLM groen licht heeft gekregen van CASAS om hun recentelijk in gebruik genomen B737-300 toestellen in te zetten op de regionale route.

Helaas is de laatste vlucht van Falcon Air van Miami naar Aruba niet vlekkeloos verlopen.

Na een rustige vlucht landde het toestel van Falcon Air in de vooravond op de Reina Beatrix luchthaven in Aruba en conform het gebruik werd de APU (Auxillary Power Unit) opgestart. De APU is een kleine jet motor die het vliegtuig voorziet van de nodige energie voor de verlichting en het aandrijven van het airco systeem aangezien de grote motoren op de grond moeten worden uitgeschakeld. Dit is een standaard procedure.

Helaas ontstond gisteren 22 juni na het opstarten van de APU op de luchthaven in Aruba een flinke rook ontwikkeling in de cabine van de MD 82 van Falcon Air. Het cockpit en cabine personeel  van Falcon Air onder leiding van gezagvoerder Ramon Sanches handelde conform de voorgeschreven regels en liet de passagiers via de nooduitgangen het toestel verlaten.

De Arubaanse luchtvaart autoriteit en de vertegenwoordiger van de SLM in Aruba hebben gerapporteerd dat de evacuatie uit het vliegtuig heel vlot is verlopen. De luchthaven brandweer die uit voorzorg ook snel aanwezig was in de omgeving van het vliegtuig kon haar actie beperken tot het assisteren van de passagiers.

Helaas hebben twee passagiers lichte kneuzingen opgelopen, waarbij een aan zijn hand moest worden behandeld door het medisch personeel van de Arubaanse luchthaven. De andere lichtgewonde passagier weigerde medische assistentie maar had naar zeggen van de aanwezige SLM vertegenwoordiger moeite om te lopen. Haar enige wens was zo snel mogelijk naar Suriname af te reizen. Om 22:24 uur Surinaamse tijd vertrokken de passagiers van Aruba met een van de B737-300 toestellen van de SLM naar de Johan Adolf Pengelluchthaven waar het toestel rond 01:10 uur dinsdagochtend arriveerde.

De voltallige directie van de SLM en enkele stafleden waren op de luchthaven aanwezig om hun medeleven te betuigen met hun passagiers die gelukkig met de schrik vrijkwamen.

De regionale vliegoperatie van de SLM wordt vanaf dinsdag 23 juni 2009 volledig uitgevoerd met haar eigen toestellen.
