Swine Flu could impact travel plans

According to CBS4, Miami - The federal government has asked all Americans to avoid nonessential travel to Mexico.

Dr. Richard Besser, the acting head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, announced Monday that the advisory was being released “out of an abundance of caution.”

So far there have been 40 confirmed cases of swine flu in the United States, including 20 in New York City. Before the CDC changed its advice to travelers, U.S. airlines had reported that some of its passengers had already changed or canceled their plans to fly to Mexico.

US Airways, American Airlines and Delta Air Lines have also reported that some passengers requested travel changes. The three airlines said their operations are proceeding as normal and they have not canceled any flights to Mexico as a result of the scare.

Over the weekend, U.S. Health Officials said those coming in from Mexico would be screened by simply asking them if they had any flu symptoms. If a traveler said something about not feeling well, the person would be questioned about symptoms and, if necessary, referred to a CDC official for additional screening.

CBS4’s Michael Williams spoke to officials from US Customs and Border Protection who say they are also looking at their protocols.

On Monday, Carnival Cruise Lines, Royal Caribbean Cruise Line and Holland America Lines released statements saying they were monitoring the situation and did not plan to change any ship itinerary.

Besser said people can help keep the disease from spreading by taking everyday precautions such as frequent handwashing, covering up coughs and sneezes, and staying away from work or school if they’re not feeling well.

It’s important to remember that swine flu is not transmitted by food or by eating pork products. The infections appear to spread from person to person.
